Welcome to EF, and to the EAP course

Dear All,

This is the blog for your EAP course.  Everything you need for the course will be posted on this blog.

As invited members of the blog, you can also post your own thoughts and questions for the whole group to see.

Aims for Week One:

1/  the 'competencies' exercise.  This is designed to give you a vocabulary for talking about skills and abilities, and it is also an exercise for you to evaluate your own skills and discover areas for development.  This kind of self-knowledge is essential for your UCAS Personal Statement, and for your general progress this year.

You should identify your competencies, and choose other competencies you would like to develop, and create your first post on your individual blog.  This is essential preparation for your Personal Statement.

2/   Make a nine-month plan

This is a detailed, thoughtful piece of writing that needs to be completed by the end of Week Two.  I will talk through this with you in class.

3/  How to choose your degree

Some of you will have a very clear idea of what you intend to study, but you must also find out if this is a realistic decision, given your grades and skills.  Many of you will probably be in the process of deciding what you would like to study.

A key factor in your thinking must be what you would like to do AFTER university.  Linked to this is how your degree choice will affect your employability.

We will spend time considering how to choose your degree course, using the website www.ucas.com/seps/profiles/

4/  We will do some work using the website  www.prepareforsuccess.org.uk

5/  You will be given a little green booklet, and at the back is a contrat between students and EF.  This needs to be read and signed by you and me.

6/  You need to set up your individual blogs, using gmail blogger.  You should invite me, and in time you can invite other students as you wish.  You will post all your work on this site, and it is also a means to ask me  questions and receive feedback about your work.  This blog is your record of all your work on EAP.  The look and design is for you to create.
